The MEP Integration Lead (Shaft & Headhouses Delivery Unit – S&HDU) will oversee the Stage 5 Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health (MEP) related activities across 12no. assets along the line of the route for the London Tunnels, ensuring design issues are escalated and resolved in a timely manner, so that the Design Integrator is able to coordinate interfacing designs. As an overseeing mind they will manage the respective MEP Package Design Managers in their activities and ensure the relevant processes & procedures are followed, and that resolved design issues are implemented across all related assets.
This role will work within the Design Management team, reporting into the Stage 5 Design Lead and Deputy Lead from an MEP perspective. They will work closely with the AFO Integration lead, the Design Integrator and the various Design Managers, to ensure a compliant, coordinated and constructable design. In addition, they will work closely with the MEP Package Managers (Delivery) and MEP supply chain, consulting with the various Engineering Managers and SMEs where necessary, whilst also maintaining a good working relationship with the delivery teams to ensure the relevant design are assured in a timely manner to enable construction activities to commence on site. This role will also be responsible for overseeing any design change (MEP in particular), and management and support with the required assurance deliverables to support DCVC and SAP.
Candidates for the role must have a proven experience of large-scale civil engineering projects. Your previous/background experience will likely have been within Design and Engineering Project Management.
You will have a good knowledge of MEP design and installation (permanent & temporary) within buildings/shafts/headhouses etc., with an appreciation of architectural design and fit-out and the corresponding interfaces with MEP. You will also have a good knowledge of rail systems activities.
Furthermore, you will have a practical and working knowledge of the processes and procedures for the delivery of works with emphasis on safety, quality, assurance, cost and programme.

Role responsibility
- Oversight of the design in terms of programme, key issues and criticality in relation to procurement/construction requirements
- Management and support the MEP Design Managers (see below) – whilst also getting involved and undertaking certain tasks usually carried out by the MEP Design Managers when required.
- Ensuring a consistent approach across the assets in relation to Stage 5 MEP design.
- Ensuring the required assurance is in place and approved, and will also be responsible for supporting with handover requirement feeding into the likes of the DCVCs and SAPs.
- Building a strong relationship with all the key stakeholders in Stage 5 design (Design Management team, AFO Integration Lead, Stage 4 DM team, MEP team, Design Integrator, SMEs, Engineering team, Technical Assurance team, planning team, BIM team, supply chain etc.)
- Reporting: management and monitoring of the MEP design progress and key issues, and reporting these to the S&HDU Design Lead/Deputy Lead, and Senior Management as required.
- Ensure that the SCS design processes are communicated and implemented. Identify where deviations from processes are required and ensure that appropriate exceptions processes are implemented. Furthermore, identifying process and/or procedural issues or gaps, and helping propose efficient way to resolve and formalise with the relevant stakeholders.
- Oversight of all MEP related Non-Conformance Records (NCRs) and associated Defects, and assisting with the resolutions to ensure a ‘best for project’ solution is sought. Also to have an appreciation for any non-MEP NCRs/Defects where relevant or that may have implications to the MEP design.
- Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies.
- Promote best practice in safety management through application of risk assessment, and ensuring CDM 2015 regulations are considered in the design and challenging the designer when required.
- Fostering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Design teams and ensuring collaborative working, the right behaviours and culture within the team and with HS2, subcontractors, suppliers and any other third parties.
Supporting the MEP Design Managers in relation to the following:
- Overseeing and supporting the MEP Design Managers with reviewing the technical details of the various MEP submissions in the 3D and 2D environment (BIM models, Drawings & deliverables), to ensure compliance, buildability and coordination. Highlighting any issues that may also affect the AFO designs and assisting with a resolution.
- Ensure that design change is managed (FCDs, TechCAFs etc), monitored and the implications (including derogations/departures) are assessed and authorised, as appropriate.
- Ensuring that design accommodates designing for maintenance and health, safety and welfare during construction and in-use (Operation and Maintenance etc).
- Tracking and reviewing design documentation, and coordinating the review of documentation with the relevant teams
- Ensure that design risks are recorded, communicated and mitigated wherever possible.
- Ensure the completion of constructability reviews.
- Identify and implement opportunities for optimization of project programme.
- Ensuring compliance with the project processes and procedures.
- Review Technical Queries (TQs)/RFIs, FCDs and NCRs as required, as well as Material Compliance Records (MCRs) as and when required.
- Management of Design integration and change control during construction.
The ideal candidate
- Educated to degree level or higher (preferably BEng or higher (MEng, MSc) and hold a relevant professional qualification.
- Experience in project-based design and management across all project stages.
- Good knowledge of construction of shafts and headhouses MEP design and installation, with an appreciation for the architectural elements and associated interfaces, along with Rail Systems.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, as well as being a Team Player.
- Experience of large complex projects where involvement with multi-discipline integration was required.
- Good understanding of the NEC contract and have experience in its application.
- Have an appreciation of BIM and the 3D environment (Navisworks etc), and have an understanding of digital engineering in design, construction and handover phases.
- Thorough understanding of managing design related project risks.
- Thorough understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015.
- Strong understanding of Engineering Principles and extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices
- Sustained Continuing Professional Development.
